Respectful condolence messages for a funeral

A condolence message is meant to comfort the family, share their sadness and help them feel a little less alone when someone they love has just died. Offering condolences is a delicate matter, so choose your words according to the actual circumstances.

In the lines below, [name] marks the place for the name of the person who has died, and [baptismal name] the saint’s name a Vietnamese Catholic receives at baptism. Several lines use the set phrase Thành kính phân ưu (“With deepest sympathy”), which is explained in a separate article.

How to send your condolences to the bereaved family

How you offer condolences should depend on who has died and what place that person held in the family. The usual way is to go in person, pay your respects and light a stick of incense. If circumstances do not allow that, you can still send a message to share the family’s pain and give them encouragement. If you can, order a funeral wreath to be delivered as a sign of your sincere sympathy.

Sympathy flowers are an expected part of a Vietnamese funeral: they let you express your condolences sincerely and formally, both to the person who has died and to the family.

What to avoid when paying respects at a funeral

  • Do not leave your phone ringer on loud: a funeral calls for a certain solemnity. If your phone rings while incense is being lit or a rite is under way, you will find yourself in an awkward position.
  • Do not joke around: joking and talking loudly are the things most frowned upon at a funeral. They make the family feel that they are not being respected, and leave a poor impression of you.
  • Wear dark clothing: when you go to pay your respects, choose dark clothes rather than bright, showy colours. Wearing a top that is mainly red, yellow or pink to a funeral is considered impolite and disrespectful to the person who has died.
  • Pregnant women usually stay away: in most cases a woman who is pregnant avoids going to a funeral. According to folk belief, the dead carry a great deal of âm khí (the cold, “yin” energy associated with death), which is thought to be bad for the mother and the unborn child. Those who are especially careful also wash and change after a funeral before they spend time with a pregnant woman.
  • Choose a suitable wreath: if you bring a wreath, pick an appropriate design. Each flower has its own meaning; some are right for a funeral and others are not.
