Vietnamese Women’s Day (20 October): a guide to giving flowers
Vietnamese Women’s Day, Ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam, falls on 20 October every year; in 2026 it is a Tuesday. It is one of the two big flower days of the Vietnamese year, along with International Women’s Day on 8 March, and the women in someone’s life (mother, wife, girlfriend, sisters, teachers, colleagues) all expect at least a few stems.
What the day is
The date marks the founding of the Vietnam Women’s Union on 20 October 1930. Today it is less a political anniversary than a day of appreciation, celebrated much like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day combined. It is not a public holiday: offices and schools stay open, which is exactly why so many flowers are handed over at work and in the classroom.
Who receives flowers
- Mothers and grandmothers
The most common reason people overseas send flowers home for 20 October. Warm, gentle colours suit them, and a basket or a pot that lasts longer than a bouquet is often appreciated.
- Wives and girlfriends
Roses are the usual choice: red for romance, pastel shades for something softer. A card in your own words matters as much as the flowers.
- Teachers
Students and parents give flowers to women teachers, a few weeks before Teachers’ Day on 20 November. Sunflowers, carnations and soft pink roses are typical.
- Colleagues
In many offices the men in a team, or the company itself, give flowers or small gifts to every woman on the staff. If you manage a team in Vietnam, this is a day people notice. Elegant baskets and boxes travel well around an office.
One thing to avoid on a happy occasion: an all-white arrangement, and white chrysanthemums in particular. In Vietnam they belong to funerals and ancestral altars. Our guide to Vietnamese flower customs covers this and the other occasions.
A few words for the card
- Chúc mừng ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam 20/10

- Chúc mẹ luôn mạnh khỏe và hạnh phúc
Wishing you good health and happiness always, Mum. In the North “mum” is often mẹ, in the South also má.
- Chúc em luôn xinh đẹp và hạnh phúc
Wishing you beauty and happiness always, to a wife or girlfriend (em is how a man usually addresses his partner).
- Chúc cô luôn mạnh khỏe, hạnh phúc
Good health and happiness, to a woman teacher (cô).
Write the message in the card field when you order, in Vietnamese or in English; we print it and attach it to the flowers.
