Flower holidays when you live in Vietnam

If you have moved to Vietnam, two things will surprise you. The holidays you grew up with are not flower days here — and the days that are will catch you off guard, because the whole city buys flowers at once.

• 14 February
  Valentine's Day

  Widely celebrated in Vietnam and one of the busiest days of the year for florists. Roses are everywhere but prices rise; ordering two or three days ahead is the difference between a good bouquet and whatever is left.

• 8 March
  International Women's Day

  Taken seriously here in a way it is not in most countries. Offices give flowers to every woman on the team. If you manage a Vietnamese team, this one matters.

• 20 October
  Vietnamese Women's Day

  A second women’s day, this one specific to Vietnam and just as big. There is no equivalent abroad, so it is the day expats most often miss.

• Second Sunday of May
  Mother's Day

  Growing in Vietnam but still modest. Carnations come from Đà Lạt and are not plentiful in early May — order a few days ahead.

• 24–25 December
  Christmas

  Widely celebrated. Wreaths, poinsettias and small trees are available. Order by around 10–12 December for the best choice.

• Late January – February
  Tết (Lunar New Year)

  Most florists in Vietnam close for several days. Whatever you need over Tết, order before the holiday starts.

What to know when ordering here

• On Vietnamese flower days — 8 March and 20 October — the good stems are gone by mid-morning. Order a day or two ahead, not on the morning itself.
• Delivery dates and times run on Vietnam time (GMT+7). Same-day inside Ho Chi Minh City; order the day before for Hanoi and other provinces.

• A greeting card in English is included. Write the message at checkout.
