Tết flowers: what people buy, what it means, and when to order

Tết is the flower season in Vietnam. Apricot blossom, peach, kumquat and orchids go into homes to bring luck; standing arrangements and baskets go to partners and managers. It is the busiest fortnight of the year — order early.

About Tết — Vietnamese Lunar New Year

Tết, the Lunar New Year, is when demand for flowers peaks in Vietnam. Flowers for the home and the family altar (apricot blossom, peach, chrysanthemum, gladiolus) and gifts for others (phalaenopsis orchids, corporate new-year arrangements) should be ordered one to two weeks ahead — stock runs short and prices rise.

FAQ

Which flowers are lucky at Tết?
The south favours yellow apricot blossom (mai) for prosperity, the north favours peach blossom (đào) to drive off bad luck and draw in good. Add kumquat for abundance, pompom chrysanthemum for longevity, phalaenopsis for elegance, and gladiolus or marigold for the altar.
How far ahead should I order for Tết?
One to two weeks, and earlier for orchid pots or corporate arrangements. This is the tightest, most expensive fortnight of the Vietnamese flower year. Flosa sends a photo of the real flowers before delivery.
What do I give a business partner at Tết?
A premium phalaenopsis orchid — several spikes, a good pot — or a standing arrangement with a "Chúc Mừng Năm Mới" (Happy New Year) banner. Both read as respect rather than decoration.
Are florists open during Tết?
Most florists in Vietnam close for several days over the holiday, and so do the wholesale markets. Whatever you need during Tết itself, order before the holiday begins.
How do I keep Tết flowers alive through the holiday?
Keep them out of draughts and direct sun. Change the water for apricot and peach branches, and keep them away from ripening fruit — the ethylene makes them drop early. Water orchids lightly at the base and never let them sit in water.

Order your Tết flowers today

Order early to keep the arrangement you want and have it delivered on the day. Flosa sends you a photo of the real flowers before delivery, with a greeting card at no extra cost.
